Tirol castle was the ancestral castle of the Counts of Tyrol, who gave the region its name. In 1363, the County of Tyrol and the castle were taken over by the Habsburgs. During the Tyrolean wars of independence around 1800, it was plundered by Bavarian occupiers and then publicly auctioned. After the war ended, Emperor Franz I was given the castle as a gift. Today, it belongs to the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/South Tyrol and is home to the South Tyrolean Museum of Culture and Provincial History.
